Why do I receive Error -5006 when installing MATLAB?

When installing MATLAB I am prompted to log into my MathWorks account to install the latest updates. After entering my username and password, I receive error 5006.

This error can occur if you log in using an email address that is longer than 30 characters.
This error can also occur if a student account is specified when MATLAB tries to connect to the MathWorks website to find updates. In this case, selecting "install from disk or local media" will bypass the error and allow MATLAB to be installed.
Another cause for this behavior, is if a user is trying to download products through the installer itself, and does not have download permissions. The user will either need to contact the administrator for permissions, or obtain the media/archives from a local site.
