fig_title = 'x\y'; title(fig_title) ;
gives error 'Warning: Unable to interpret TeX string'
same warning for fig_title = ['x', char(92), 'y']; is there a proper way to write the code?

A backslant (\) causes the following character to be rendered literally. So to print one in the title, use two:
title('x\\y')
